Abstract

This paper studies the movement of the indigenous community of Cherán that led them to form the first legally recognized indigenous municipality within the Mexican State; We will refer to the search for its right to self-determination expressed in self-government, to the conformation of its governmental structure as a result of its new legal and political reality, as well as to the dimensions of the P'urhépecha government with which it coexists.
